This Sleek Three-Seater Is the Ultimate Personal Submarine

The ocean is yours.

It’s not amphibious like the futuristic Libelule. It won’t dive as deep as the Triton 6600/2. And it won’t breach and roll like a crazy motorized sea creature. But Ortega’s three-seater Mk. 1C submersible looks like the most fun you and two friends can have above and below the waterline.

Powerful but silent twin electric engines propel the sub at roughly 10 mph along the surface and 13 mph underwater. Its on-board equipment—which includes a built-in breathing apparatus—supports dive depths of 310 feet. And the Dutch company’s proprietary battery technology gives the vessel a range of 92 miles.

Depending on what kind of oceanic exploration you have in mind, the Mk. 1C can be configured with all sorts of technology and cargo capabilities. Just imagine what you could do with sonar and a heads-up navigation display guiding you, forward looking infrared cameras scanning and an extended air supply.

With a beam of just 45 inches, this sleek vessel is roughly as wide as two average business class seats side-by-side. And though it may not be the fastest ride, no other vessel can instantly grant you and two buddies with a better sense of freedom and underwater adventure.
