Mazda went and slipped a little of its Miata mojo into the new CX-5 compact crossover SUV. The styling is aggressive for a family hauler, and the CX-5 handles better than anything we’ve driven in its class. Cornering is tight with almost no body roll, and the steering is light and responsive. The four-cylinder gas engine in the model we drove isn’t going to win you any racing trophies, but these days we’re happy to take the nearly 30 mpg we averaged. The six-speed automatic provided seamless shifts, but we’d like to try the manual next time. Hey, no one’s better at handling a stick than us!
