Olympic great Michael Phelps has already proven that he's the greatest human swimmer to ever live. Now he's ready to take on other species.

As a part of Discovery Channel's "Shark Week," the 23-time gold medalist will race a great white shark

hey are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds.

But he has one competition left to win. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark – the race is on!

Move over Conor and Floyd. This is the kind of truly ridiculous sporting gimmick we can get behind.

Unfortunately, all signs point to this being as big a mismatch as the fight everyone is talking about. According to ESPN, Phelps has reached a top speed of 6 mph. That's a mere crawl compared to a great white, which can hit 35 mph.

Phelps racing a great white follows in a long line of silly TV gimmicks pitting man against beast. And while we're certainly going to watch this, there's little chance it's more entertaining than this competition between a gymnast and an orangutan, which features one of the competitors pissing all over the set.

You'll have to watch the video above to find out which one.
