Audemars Piguet Channels 1960s Brutalism With [RE]Master Watch

Audemars Piguet watches, at the intersection of luxury design and precision timekeeping, don’t often stray from tried-and-true silhouettes like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, for instance. But when they do, it’s worth taking a (much) closer look, as with the asymmetrical and instantly eye-catching Audemars Piguet [RE]Master 02.
It’s almost difficult to know where to start with the latest [RE]Master launch, which boasts next-level specifications and precise craftsmanship.
As Audemars Piguet notes, the new timepiece follows “in the footsteps of [RE]Master01, launched in 2020 to reinterpret a rare chronograph from 1943.”
That first edition, the handsome [RE]Master Self-winding Chronograph, presents a high bar to clear in matters of style, taste and design.
The second edition boasts a geometric case that’s a work of art in its own right, and it’s crafted from even more impressive materials: Sand gold, a new 18-karat gold alloy, allows for a distinctive play of light and shadow.
The watch also carries with it fine pedigree, a tribute to a 1960 timepiece (the Model 5159BA) and Brutalist designs of that year.
The parted blue dial boasts a striking brushed finish for even more distinct character, and the watch hands and buckle clasp are also crafted from rare sand gold for the ultimate in luxurious detailing.
Within the watch, Audemars Piguet presents its latest timepiece with a Calibre 7129 movement, all the while “combining vintage aesthetic with cutting-edge performance.”
An exhibition caseback bears a “Limited Edition” marking, while an elegant blue alligator leather textured strap adds refined appeal to an already-exceptional timepiece.
Accordingly, it’s priced in a rarified air: The new Audemars Piguet [RE]Master 02, in a limited offering of just 250 watches, retails for $47,200.
Considering the going rate for other more widely available Audemars Piguet timepieces, it might be a (relative) bargain for its one-of-a-kind design among AP collectors and design enthusiasts.
