Not that she needed a lick of photo shop, but Ariel Winter is being celebrated as a “body positive hero” and “queen” by netizens for her bold and unretouched SELF magazine shoot.

In the striking black-and-white photo series shot by Jones Crow, the 18-year-old Modern Family star appears topless, covering her breasts with a towel (or maybe a blanket). On full display, however, are her breast reduction surgery scars—a so-called “deformity” Winter has been working to destigmatize. 

“It was hard for me in the beginning to deal with people’s comments and deal with everybody having an opinion on absolutely everything I did,” Winter told the magazine. “It was hard for me to not fall prey to wanting to change the way I felt and the way I did things and the way I looked because of what other people said.”
