What a Beautiful Woman Wants: Gillian Nation

“My guiltiest pleasures are White Russians, gangster movies, Stephen King books, tiramisu, pasta and some things I’m probably not allowed to say in this interview.”

You’d never guess by looking at Gillian Nation or her fiery Instagram feed that she’s a home-schooled farm girl from Montana. In fact, the Los Angeles-based model wouldn’t have become one of industry’s rising stars if it weren’t for a persuasive hometown friend. 

“I originally got into modeling by sheer accident. My friend from back home was the one who convinced me to send pictures into an agency, and everything started from there.”

Fast-forward to the present, and Nation has landed the covers of Treats and Playboy Mexico. And who could forget the time she brought our “Hot for Teacher” fantasies to life in a Van Halen-set trio of clips for photographer Chris Applebaum’s EATS series.

How can someone catch your attention?

Well, this is a complicated question, as no one man is the same. However, the short answer would be by not trying too hard and being a gentleman. Confidence and compassion are very attractive traits to me, as well as a guy who can make me laugh. Someone who can be cheesy and own it I think is really cute.

What’s the worst pick-up line you’ve ever heard?

Honestly there are so many bad ones! But one that stands out was, “I’m glad I got my library card, because I’m definitely checking you out.”

How do do you let someone know you’re interested?

I’m really shy, especially when I first start to like a guy. I just try to play it cool. I’ll try to share my interests with him, but I’m so awkward and self conscious, so that’s probably the real way to tell at first.

Tell us about your dream date.

I don’t have an exact “dream date.” However, I am a hopeless romantic and love anything spontaneous. It doesn’t have to be big or glamorous.
Maybe just a walk on the beach, staying in and cooking dinner, going on a hike, going to a cool new bar or seeing a band. It’s more of the quality of time together that I want. A real conversation and real connection versus going somewhere or doing something for just a big show.

What turns you on the most?

That’s such a hard question. Every person is so different and have such unique traits. I love a guy who can make me laugh, has a good heart, someone I can talk to, and be myself with (That’s harder to find than you’d think.) I don’t usually open up to a lot of people, so when I open up to a guy, it’s really attractive when he actually is open-minded and wants to hear what I’m saying. Of course someone who takes care of himself, is confident, and cares about themselves as well, but never someone who is too arrogant or self-focused. That’s a huge turnoff to me.

When do you feel sexiest?

When I’m fresh out of the ocean or riding a horse at full speed. There’s just something exhilarating about that. Also when one of my favorite songs comes on or just certain special moments when you’re with someone you really care about. I can’t really describe those moments, but they just make me feel so much more alive and sexy.

Who’s your biggest celebrity crush?

James Franco, Russell Crowe, Cillian Murphy and Angelina Jolie

What’s on your fave music playlist?

It sounds so cliche, but I really do listen to nearly everything. I especially like old rock, most ’90s music, punk rock, jazz, folk, musicals, and classical.

Do you have a favorite athlete or team?

I’m really horrible at all sports except horseback riding. I’ve been horseback riding and playing piano (if either of those count as sports). I’ve been practicing them both for about 15 years.

What fashion brands do you like to rock?

I’m honesty not really a name brand girl. The brands I like are bit more average, such as For Love & Lemons, Levi’s, Redone, and Free People. I mainly just shop at used stores.

What’s your absolute favorite food? 

I love pie! You can eat it at any time of the day. I also love pasta, Mexican food, and good cheese with wine and bread. I really like to cook my own food at home a lot too.

Favorite travel destination?

I haven’t come close to seeing all the beautiful places I’d like to yet, but so far one of my favorites was Medellin, Colombia. Everyone there was so warm and welcoming, and the culture I thought was really beautiful.
