Who is she?
A ridiculously sexy siren who spent the latter half of 2011 burning up the Internet (check out her clip for “Video Games”). With her debut, Born to Die, out tomorrow, she’s destined for total dominance—her noirish sound is tailor-made for Victoria’s Secret ads or the soundtrack to Mad Men.
Why should you care?
First of all, look at her. We can’t recall the last time a new artist oozed this much classic Hollywood sex appeal. But more important, all the cool kids will be talking about her. In 2011 no one divided indie-rock fans like Del Rey. Homegirl is quite the controversial figure!
What’s the controversy all about?
Well, it was only a few short years ago that Lana Del Rey was Lizzie Grant, a young singer-songwriter struggling to make it on New York’s Lower East Side. And in a world where “authenticity is more important than, you know, talent, that image makeover rubs a lot of people the wrong way.
Where did she come from?
Lizzie Grant comes from Lake Placid in upstate New York, but we’d like to imagine that Lana Del Rey grew up in a smoky New Orleans nightclub and traveled to the present from 1962.
So is she worth a listen?
Hell, yeah! Eff the hipsters and their authenticity. This is the best baby-making music since D’Angelo fell off the face of the Earth. Pick up her album in time for Valentine’s Day and you just might get pregnant.
