Watch BMW Showcase Trippy New Color-Changing Tech at CES 2022

The viral video reveals BMW’s M-badged EV’s shape-shifting paint coat.

The BMW iX M60’s debut at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show spawned a freaky viral video depicting the sporty all-electric SUV with a chameleon paint coat.

Carscoops spotted the clip from Out of Spec Studios, noting that the German marque had promised to demonstrate “a technology that changes the exterior color of a vehicle with the touch of a button.”

No other details about the hue-shifting tech were released, but the footage says it all. An initial gray finish gives way to white in the blink of an eye.

Then gray returns gradually, beginning at the front fascia and progressing rearward in a wave of color. If BMW hadn’t explicitly mentioned the capability, some might think the video was doctored.

The choice in vehicle makes sense, as the performance-minded BMW iX M60 is billed as the automaker’s “new technological flagship.”

Car and Driver reports that the dual-motor EV produces 610 hp and 811 pound-feet of torque in Sport Mode, enough to push the 5,769 behemoth to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. Maximum range is 280 miles on 21-inch wheels.

Standard tech includes an air suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers, adjustable ride height, drive modes with customizable damper mapping, and interior treats like BMW’s speech/gesture control system and Bowers & Wilkins audio.

Sadly, it does not appear as though the color-changing tech is a real option–at least for now.

The BMW iX M60 will retail for $106,095 when it goes on sale in the U.S. this June.
