Not a watchmaker, but a watch “re-maker”—who else but AET Remould would dare to tweak a Richard Mille or upgrade an Audemars Piguet? Similar to the way Brabus turns G-Wagens into impossibly brawny adventure machines, the German watch design and modification brand is making its mark with truly unique timepieces.

The acronym stands for Artistic, Expression and Thought, “all of these being pillars of AET Remould’s core values which led to the creation of the brand name,” they note. Founded by the late Jonas Hofmann, an experienced watchmaker, each of their eye-opening pieces is limited to just a handful of examples.

No wonder they’ve attracted fans including rapper Rick Ross, social media star turned professional boxer Jake Paul, and pro footballer Javier Hernández Balcázar of the LA Galaxy, plus royalty ranging from Malaysia to the UAE.

We spoke with AET Remould’s Vincent Schmidt about the burgeoning brand and what drives them to create ever-more-covetable heirlooms:

What is the inspiration behind AET Remould?

The original intention of Jonas Hofmann to decide to create AET Remould stemmed from his love for watches and his enthusiasm for the field of watch modification. He had worked in the watchmaking industry for many years. He knew the essence of mechanical watches and had a deep understanding and technical knowledge of watch modification.

He hoped to redefine the aesthetic standards of watches through his own design concepts, and create watches with both artistic value and practicality. Jonas Hofmann dedicated his life to the watch industry. Although he has passed away, his influence and contribution to the AET Remould brand will always be remembered.

What is the brand’s design philosophy?

Avoiding unnecessary redundancy as well as conveying concise, precise and powerful aesthetics has always been the first element of our product design. For example, for the “Rodin Series” watch named after the artist Rodin, the design follows Rodin’s ideas about artistic creation: “A true artist always takes risks to overthrow all existing prejudices and express his true thoughts.”

At the same time, we are also well versed in the manufacturing process of mechanical watches, constantly innovating design concepts, combining high-tech materials with watchmaking technology, and creating extremely creative and unique modified watches. In all, brands are constantly pursuing and innovating to bring customers more refined, practical and artistic watch products.

How did you decide which watch brands to work with?

The modification of AET Remould is currently based on four major watch brands, namely Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Richard Mille. These watch brands are the best in the industry, a fact which is widely recognized. They are representatives of the highest quality, exquisite workmanship, and strong reliability. Based on these watch modifications, AET Remould can be associated with these top watch brands. Meanwhile, it can also reflect AET Remould’s superb modification technology.

What are some of AET Remould’s signature materials and modifications?

The featured materials of AET Remould are sapphire and high-tech ceramics. Sapphire has extremely high hardness, high transparency and high gloss which can present a clear and unique texture when it is used to make the case. Besides, we have also tried to use Sapphire for making watch straps, which is rare in the industry. As for high-tech ceramic, it is a high-strength, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant material that can significantly improve product texture when it is used into manufacturing watches. This is certainly a very desirable material.
