What to Watch: May 9th to May 15th, 2011

This week, funnyman Ed Helms hosts SNL, Kings of Leon dissect songs on VH-1 and the NBA Playoffs compete with the Stanley Cup Finals.

There’s a lot of TV options to choose from. Too much for any one person to completely monitor, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to do our best to sift through all the listings and figure out what you should be watching every week…with all the highlights, lowlights, and guilty pleasures you can stand.

Monday, May 9

7:00 p.m. Attack of the Show!(G4)

You’d better hope that TV of yours is flame retardant. Not only will Attack of the Show! co-host Candace Bailey (who just so happened to make our 2011 Hot 100 list feature segments on hot gadgets and websites during tonight’s ep, she’s also welcoming the equally scorching Devin Kelley (The Chicago Code) as a guest.

8:00 p.m., Humanly Impossible (NGC)

The latest installment of this National Geographic Channel show about people doing seemingly unfeasible things, features a bevy of logic-defying freak shows, including a guy who swallows light bulbs and another one who can lift 70 lbs. using only his nipples. Impossible? Apparently not. Re-goddamn-diculous? Absolutely.

Thursday, May 12

8:00 p.m., Nikita(The CW)

So what if the first season of this take on the assassin thriller Nikita—which has its finale tonight—didn’t exactly live up to the 1990 French flick of which its based? It’s been worth tuning in each week to watch the amazing Maggie Q as the aforementioned Nikita and the equally tantalizing Lyndsy Fonseca (hey, she didn’t make the Hot 100 list for nothin’, either) kick some ass.

Friday, May 13

11:00 p.m. Storytellers: Kings of Leon (VH1)

New rock gods Kings of Leon will share the tales behind their hit songs like “Use Somebody,” “Molly’s Chambers,” and “Radioactive.” We’re hoping that KoL front man Caleb Followill—or any one of his band mates/brothers/cousins, for that matter– will once and for all put our fears to rest and confirm that “Sex On Fire” isn’t actually about an STD.

Saturday, May 14

11:30 p.m. Saturday Night Live (NBC)

Before he rejoins his wolf pack on the big screen for The Hangover: Part II, Ed Helms will get to take his first crack at hosting SNL. Perhaps he and musical guest Paul Simon will even buddy up and perform a duet of “Stu’s Song”. You snooze, you lose, Garfunkel!

Sunday, May 15

9:30 p.m. The Cleveland Show (Fox)

The second season finale of the Family Guy spin-off should delight fanboys everywhere (and they are an opinionated bunch) when they give Comic-Con the animated treatment. While Cleveland attempts to sell his comic book “Waderman” at the convention, he and the rest of the Brown-Tubbs clan, come across the likes of Eliza Dushku, Emily Deschanel, Katee Sackhoff, and Robert Rodriguez, all of whom provided their voices for the episode.

NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals (Check local listings)

There’s an older episode of How I Met Your Mother in which Jason Segel’s character Marshall introduced BaskIceBall, a dangerous, yet majestic sport which combines, you guessed it, basketball and ice hockey. We wish BaskIceBall were real for a number of reasons (including seeing Kobe in a pair of skates), but mostly because then we wouldn’t have to decide between watching the NBA Playoffs (on TNT) and the Stanley Cup Finals (on Versus.)
